Chapter 1

Explination:
The novel the Great Gatsby is a narrative story about a young man named Nick Carraway. He describes the life of Gatsby and his love for Daisy Buchanan. The cover of the novel, as seen to the right, describes how the story is sad and depessed. Although many of the characters are rich all of them seem to have thier own flaws. In chapter 1 the Narrator Nick Carraway meets up with an old friend named Tom Buchannon. Nick and Tom go to toms house and meet his wife Daisy and another woman Miss Baker. They begin to eat and soon begin talking about gossip and Nick soon learns about some of the secrets and flaws of thier relationships

Quotes:
"You remind me of a rose an absolute rose...This was untrue. I'm not even faintly like a rose"(19).
  • Daisy Buchnan had said this to Nick Carraway, and he thought to himself "this was untrue". This is important because it shows how people are fake and over exaggerate things to try to be better than the other rich people.

"Tom's got some woman in New York"(19).

  • This shows how Tom Buchnan is a fake person and thinks about himself before other people such as Daisy, his wife. He rather make himself happy and lie than think about her feelings.

"But no he'd left Chicago and come east in a fashion that rather took your breath away: for instance he'd bought down a stringe of polo ponies from Lake Forest. It was hard to realize that a man in my own generation was wealthy enough to do that"(10).

  • Nick Carrway said this as he was talking about Tom, which is important becuase it shows much of the way the people who have money thought. Most of these people did things with their money careessly just because they had it. Tom Buchnan spent all his money just for his amusement.

" 'I've got a nice place here' he said his eyes flashing about restlessly"(12).

  • Tom Buchnan had said this talking about his house, almost to rub it in Nick Carrway's face. He wanted to display what he had and wants everyone to know it. This also shows how most people are never really satisfied so they try to make themselves feel better to satisfy themselves.

"I'll tell you a family secret"(18).

  • Daisy had said this because she wants to brag about her family and her wealth. Most of the characters in the novel display a significant amount of fakness and love to gossip and tell strange stories to make themselves look better.
